Every year we use #WorldToiletDay to help raise awareness for the millions of people currently living without access to a clean, safe toilet. This year is no different.
We must fight to tackle the global sanitisation crisis and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
By choosing to twin our workplace with a safe and sustainable toilet elsewhere around the world we are helping people trapped in a vicious cycle of poor sanitation and disease to learn new hygiene practices and fight illnesses linked to lack of soap and clean water.
Why are toilets so important?
- Illness makes going to work hard or worst case scenario impossible, meaning loss of income
- Children are likely to miss school through sickness or through collecting water for the family being a higher priority
- Girls drop out of school when their period starts if there are no toilets or changing rooms
- Women and girls risk being attacked or bitten by snakes if they go to the toilet in the open. Often their culture will only allow them to go at night
Toilet Twinning don’t just build latrine’s for locals and leave, they create relationships and trust with the locals, and teach them about bathroom hygiene, sanitation, the connection between poor hygiene and illness and how to maintain a toilet or latrine. This way locals are more likely to keep their latrine’s serviceable and clean.
So far, we’ve twinned our Croydex toilets in the UK with a school block in Afghanistan, a latrine in Kenya, a latrine in Malawi, a school block in Uganda and this year a school block in Malawi.
In Malawi Toilet Twinning are working in Salima, Balaka and Mchinji districts to empower the poorest and most vulnerable and marginalised families to identify and address the root causes of their poverty. The project is working to:
- Improve rural livelihoods
- Improve water and sanitation
- Reduce vulnerability to disasters such as drought, floods and earthquakes
- Environment and the management of natural resources
- HIV and AIDS prevention
